Denon shows great VISION with its AVR-X2400H AV receiver

Denon AVR-X2400H AV receiver

Denon's latest AV receiver - the AVR-X2400H - supersedes last year's award-winning AVR-X2300W, which itself replaced the award-winning AVR-X2200W. There's a pattern emerging here...! Each year, Denon takes its award-winning amp and enhances it whatever way it can to ensure that it stays top of customers' AV receiver short lists.

Where the AVR-X2400H scores over previous models is its support of Dolby Vision and Denon's own HEOS platform. HEOS is Denon's wireless multi-room system, allowing music to be played throughout the home on compatible devices. As for the other major new feature, after decades of creating audio-related technologies, Dolby Labs has created Dolby Vision, which delivers sharp visuals with huge levels of brightness and contrast. This is achieved from content mastered in Dolby Vision and via a Dolby Vision-compatible display.

Surround-sound formats by Dolby and DTS are catered for. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X place sound effects more precisely than other formats and even support overhead channels. If not using the rear channels that form part of a 7.1 set-up, a 5.1.2 configuration can be used instead, employing two ceiling speakers - or, alternatively, two upward-firing speakers bouncing the sound off the ceiling - to convey overhead effects. Still-brilliant surround-sound formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are also catered for. The auto-setup feature ensures that the amp's relationship with each speaker is calibrated for optimal performance.

The receiver can handle 4K images (including pass-through and upscaling) and it supports 3D images, too. The amp includes 8 HDMI inputs (including one on the front panel) and two HDMI outputs - all conforming to the latest HDMI specification.

As well as being the heart of a top-class home cinema, the AVR-X2400H will also act as a sophisticated home entertainment hub. Old-school radio tuners (FM and AM) are on board but content from music libraries, internet radio and other music-streaming services can be delivered via Ethernet or over Wi-Fi (2.4GHz or 5GHz) via the HEOS functionality. Other streaming options include Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay.

For music playback, there's support for high-resolution files. Quick Select buttons on the receiver's front panel allow a source and the preferred processing mode to be selected in one button push. A remote control is supplied but apps to control the amp and the HEOS functionality are also available.

Denon's AVR-X2400H AV receiver is as futureproof as a £500 (SRP) AV receiver can be and it's in stock at Hi-Fi Stereo.
