Rega Fono MM: a FONO-menal pre-amp!

Rega Fono MM Mk3 phono pre-amp

Amplifiers don't always contain phono pre-amps for listening to records. And, even when they do, in most cases, they're not the best option for vinyl lovers. That's where phono pre-amps come in, sitting between a record deck and a standard amplifier to (a) allow the deck to be heard via an amp's line-level input and/or (b) produce better reproduction than most on-board pre-amps.

Rega is superb at producing turntables and amplifiers, winning best-in-class awards with pretty much every deck and amplifier it produces. It's no surprise, therefore, that Rega's phono stages also pick up awards galore. Rega's Fono MM Mk2 has picked up What Hi-Fi's award for best phono stage for the last four years. Its successor has a phenomenal foundation to build upon.

The Rega Fono MM Mk3 is a compact, mid-price (£198) unit. Like Rega's Brio amp, the Fono MM has had a facelift, with its curvaceous fascia giving a less-industrial appearance than its predecessor. The aluminium case is home to audiophile components and numerous tweaks have been made to improve the performance over the already excellent Mk2 model.

As indicated by the model name, the Fono MM is designed to be used with moving magnet cartridges - the type most commonly used. Rega also produces a moving coil variant of the Fono: the Fono MC (£248), which includes gain controls.

The Fono MM is in stock now at Hi-Fi Stereo and is the perfect partner for mid-price turntables.
