Sennheiser: spotlight on a pair of pairs!

Sennheiser M2 IEi earphones and HD 569 headphones

Sennheiser specialises in heaphones and earphones. Consequently, it's no surprise that the company produces a huge array of products, covering all sorts of styles and uses. With such a huge range, though, it can be difficult to home in on a good pair that suits both the intended use and budget. So here, we focus on a couple of premium products at popular price points.

The Momentum M2 IEi inner-ear headphones are an obvious choice for anyone who takes their listening seriously but wants the convenience of earphones. These classy 'phones are What Hi-Fi's in-ear headphones of the year and have been for two years. The headphones have been praised for their detailed yet smooth sound throughout the audio spectrum. Their sonic ability would make you think they cost twice the £89.99 price tag.

The M2 IEis come supplied with a smart storage case and four different sizes of ear buds to ensure a comfortable fit. For convenience, the cable incorporates a microphone and controls to play, pause, skip tracks, adjust the volume and take phone calls. The "i" in the model name indicates that the ear phones are compatible with iOS devices but a "G" variant is available for compatibility with non-Apple products.

Sennheiser's HD 569 headphones are a closed-back design, minimising the chances of external noise disrupting the listening experience or of the music leaking from the headphones, disturbing others.

The HD 569s have an extremely wide frequency response, capable of going as low as 10Hz and as high as 28kHz - these headphones are not likely to produce distortion. The over-ear design and soft, plush padding provide a high degree of comfort. So, a comfortable listen on all fronts.

The 569's come supplied with two, detachable cables. For home use, there's a 3-metre cable terminated with a 6.3mm jack. The noise- isolating, closed-back design of the headphones also makes them suitable for commuting or holidays and, for this purpose, there's also a 1.2-metre cable that incorporates a remote control and microphone. The one-button remote can be used to play/pause music and take/end phone calls.

The HD 569 headphones cost £149.99 and, like the M2 IEi ear phones, are in stock at Hi-Fi Stereo.
