Sonos Trueplay: optimised output for wireless speakers

Sonos PLAY:1, PLAY:3 and PLAY:5 music players

For years, AV receivers have been equipped with technology that can automatically calibrate home cinema speakers so that the sound from each speaker is tailored to the room and listening position. Until now, customising the output of music-only set-ups has been either a primitive practice (say, moving speakers closer to/away from walls or inserting bungs into ports) or a manual one (remember graphic equalisers?). But now, Sonos has produced a solution for its media players.

The iOS versions of the Sonos app now include a feature called Trueplay, which can be used to optimise the output of Sonos' media players. The media player emits test tones that are received by the iPod, iPhone or iPad. The received signals are then analysed and the output of the player tweaked to produce the best performance, given the room's layout, furnishings, etc.

Initially, the new feature supports the PLAY:1, PLAY:3 and both versions of the PLAY:5 (the second version of the PLAY:5 is due imminently).

The Sonos Trueplay update is now available.
