Denon AVR-X2200W AV receiver offers an X-citing future!

Denon AVR-X2200W AV receiver

The specification of the cutting-edge Denon AVR-X2200W AV receiver is so extensive, it's difficult to know where to start. So let's start with a feature that's so new, it's not even available yet!

DTS:X surround-sound processing is not yet offered by AV receivers but the AVR-X2200W can be updated to include it via a free online firmware update once it's released (this autumn). DTS:X makes sounds appear to come from specific points in the listening room and so can appear to come from between speakers as well as from them. And, as the levels of specific sounds can be adjusted by the listener, dialogue can be given prominence over sound effects to ensure that the dialogue is heard clearly. New discs aren't necessary to get the DTS:X experience as DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks are compatible.

Dolby Atmos is already on board the receiver and is very effective at producing a more immersive home cinema experience by having channels for overhead, be they served by ceiling speakers or upward-firing speakers that bounce sounds off the ceiling: great for effects like helicopters, thunder, overhead footsteps...

More established processing modes, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are, of course, also handled by the receiver.

The AVR-X2200W has a generous eight HDMI inputs and two outputs. All ten sockets are HDCP 2.2-compliant - required for playing back 4K Ultra HD movies. The receiver also upscales non-4K content to 4K.

Dual antennas provide a robust reception for content streamed via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or AirPlay. Spotify Connect and an iOS-friendly USB input further acknowledge the varied, modern ways in which customers play music. The remote control is smart but there's also a controller app available for iOS and Android devices.

Denon has also provided some thoughtful touches. The speaker sockets on the AVR-X2200W are colour coded and stickers are supplied to help identify which cables come from which speakers. To further assist setting up, a height-adjustable cardboard stand is included for the supplied microphone. The receiver can automatically calibrate the output of each speaker and this is best done with the microphone placed at the ear level of the main listener's position. With the supplied stand, the listener need not be present whilst this process takes place or hold the microphone steady for minutes.

A heavy feature count and cutting-edge technology don't necessarily translate into great performance. They do with the Denon AVR-X2200W. It delivers a stunning performance with movies and music and is a great home entertainment hub - especially for under £500. It can be purchased now from Hi-Fi Stereo.
