Denon RCD-M40 system: dinky Denon leads the way

Denon RCD-M40 CD receiver

Every two or three years, Denon updates its entry-level CD receiver to ensure it remains the market leader. Denon's latest baby - the RCD-M40 - has arrived and its a well-received delivery indeed.

The smart, small unit houses essentials such as a CD player and an upgraded FM/DAB/DAB+ tuner. iPods and iPhones can be played back via a USB input on the fascia, which feeds signals to the uprated 192kHz/32-bit DAC. As do the optical digital inputs (there are now two instead of one). Yet another component can hook up to the CD receiver via a pair of phono sockets. On the output front, there's a headphone socket, a subwoofer output and a set of decent speaker terminals. These should be connected to a pair of fine, budget speakers such as the DALI Zensor 1s or the Q Acoustics 3020s or 3010s.

Denon has also revised the remote control, which is very smart.

The sound quality of the Denon RCD-M40 is remarkable, given the size and cost (£249.99). This dinky micro system is in stock now at Hi-Fi Stereo.
