Yamaha RX-V377 receiver: plenty of bang for your buck

Yamaha RX-V377 AV receiver

The Yamaha RX-V377 AV receiver is the Japanese giant's latest entry-level home cinema hub.

With such a competitive SRP (£249.95), it would be unreasonable to expect premium-quality components and masses of features. However, the receiver's captivating reproduction of movie soundtracks has recently helped it win What Hi-Fi's accolade of best home cinema amplifier under £350.

And the receiver does sport some handy features. The four HDMI inputs and one HDMI output support 3D, Audio Return Channel (ARC) and 4k Ultra HD pass-through.

Scene buttons allow powering up, input selection and the selection of a processing mode with a single button push. HDMI CEC compatibility provides a similar convenience: if connected to a CEC-compatible TV, turning on the receiver will also power up the TV.

The front panel features a USB socket compatible with iPods and iPhones. The receiver will charge the device and its remote control will control it.

The RX-V377 also sports automatic speaker calibration so that the output through each connected speaker is tailored to produce a perfectly balanced soundtrack for the listening position.

As always, black will be the most popular finish but a titanium finish is also available.

Call in to Hi-Fi Stereo if you're after a surround sound receiver that offers plenty of bang for your buck (literally, if you watch action movies!). The Yamaha RX-V377 certainly fits the bill.

Also available: the Yamaha RX-V677 network AV receiver, which powers more channels, has more power, Wi-Fi, Airplay, HTC Connect, a controler app, iPad compatibility, 4k upscaling...
