Onkyo CR-N755: a networked-system bargain

Onkyo CR-N755 networked CD receiver

There are some fabulous all-in-one systems on the market. At the budget end, Denon's D-M39DAB system offers belting sound quality. At the mid-price point, there's the Marantz Melody Media receiver, which offers streaming. But what if you'd like a networked system for budget money? Well, Onkyo has a habit of making new technology available at lower price points than other manufacturers and that's what it's done with the new CR-N755 network CD receiver.

At £300, the CR-N755 is not only compact in size, the price tag's small, too, especially for a system that's capable of streaming music. This can be done via the Ethernet socket or the optional Wi-fi or Bluetooth dongles.

Around the back, you'll find phono sockets and digital inputs (both optical and coaxial) for connecting other devices. The speaker connectors are good quality and we recommend partnering the receiver with Mission, Monitor Audio or DALI speakers.

The receiver incorporates FM and AM tuners. There's no DAB but, with the ability to stream internet radio stations and access other internet music services, that shouldn't be a problem. There's no AirPlay either but the front USB socket is compatible with iPods, iPhones and memory sticks. Apps are available for controlling the system via iOS or Android devices instead of the remote control.

The receiver is smartly finished in black or silver. The display is clear, the controls are responsive and intuitive and, most crucially, the sound is clear and well balanced.

The Onkyo CR-N755 is superb value and is in stock at Hi-Fi Stereo.
