Onkyo retains the advantage with its AV receiver

Onkyo TX-NR609 network AV receiver

Onkyo has consistently delivered AV receivers that have had the latest features before the competition or at a lower price point. So, what does this cutting-edge manufacturer offer with its latest range?

Well, the TX-NR609 (the successor to the award-winning TX-SR608) has internet radio music streaming capabilities and even provides a direct interface to Spotify - the streaming music service with a catalogue of over 10 million songs encrypted at a bitrate of 320kbps. (A Spotify Premium account is required.) Even album artwork is available for displaying on a connected TV.

As well as adding an Ethernet connection for streaming music from Last.fm, Napster, computers and, of course, Spotify, a USB input is also now present, allowing playback from an iPod or iPhone.

Want more innovation and future-proofing? The Onkyo TX-NR609 incorporates 4K upscaling, converting video into ultra-high res images of 3840 x 2160 pixels (four times that of 1080p). (Obviously, a 4K-compatible screen is required.)

Styling has had a revamp (which is welcome, to be honest - ironically, whilst previous Onkyo ranges led the pack with the latest features, they actually looked older than the competition.

Elsewhere, it's as you were (no bad thing at all) with 7-channel amplification, two subwoofer outputs, THX accreditation, an FM/AM radio and 6 HMDI inputs capable of receiving 3D video.

The £500 Onkyo TX-NR609 is available in black or silver and is now in stock at Hi-Fi Stereo.
