Onkyo TX-SR608 AV receiver has six of the best

Onkyo TX-SR608 AV receiver

Onkyo's AV receivers are always healthily specified for the money and the company's latest - the £450 TX-SR608 - is no different.

The receiver has no fewer than six HDMI inputs (plus one to connect to a TV) so there's very little chance of running out of inputs. And the sockets conform to the latest HDMI specification. HDMI version 1.4a supports the transfer of 3D visuals from, say, a Blu-ray player through the receiver to a 3D-compatible television. It also allows sound to travel from a television to the amp down the same cable that takes sound and picture to the telly.

The amp can power a 7.2 speaker setup (two subwoofer outputs are provided). Another two channels can be used to feed a second stereo pair in another room - this multi-tasking product can play, say, a movie in the lounge and the integrated FM/AM radio in the dining room. All the speaker terminals can accept banana plugs/good quality cable. Power output to the speakers is 160 watts per channel (at 6 ohms).

Of course, a generous feature count is no good if the sound isn't up to scratch. The receiver sounds terrific, though, and has gained THX Select2 Plus certification.

Unlike some brands, Onkyo produces AV receivers in silver as well as black, further broadening its appeal. With its great sound and a specification that's as future-proof as can be, the Onkyo TX-SR608 is sure to be a very popular product and is now in stock at Hi-Fi Stereo.
